Some groups use cant to feel close. They might be part of a small community. This can include teenagers or people in jobs like medicine. Doctors use special words to talk to each other. This is a type of jargon. It uses short names for big ideas.

There are many kinds of cant in the world. In Ireland, some people use a language called Shelta. In Scotland, there are two kinds of cant. One is used by the Lowland Romani people. It is called Scottish Cant. The other is used by Highland Travellers. It is called Beurla Reagaird. These two ways of talking are very different. You cannot understand one by knowing the other.

Authors also make up secret languages for books. In the book A Clockwork Orange, the boy speaks Nadsat. This makes the story feel unique. Whether real or made up, these words help people connect.
