Pidgin

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes, people from different places meet. They may not share a language. To talk, they make a new way to speak. This is called a pidgin.

A pidgin is a simple way to communicate. It is not a person's first language. People often use it for trade. They use it to buy and sell goods. A pidgin uses a small set of words. These words can come from many different languages. It can even use sounds or body language.

The word pidgin may come from a Chinese word. That word meant "business." This makes sense because people use pidgins for work. Some pidgins are called jargon. This is a name for a very simple pidgin. One example is Chinook Jargon.

A pidgin can change over time. If children grow up speaking a pidgin, it becomes something new. It becomes a creole. A creole is a full language. It has many more words and rules.

Some pidgins die out. Others grow into big languages. For example, Swahili grew from trade languages. People in Hawaii also call their local speech "Pidgin." It is a special way to connect.
