Michael Halliday was a British scholar. He spent his life studying language. He wanted to know how we use words to share meaning. He called this "languaging." To him, language is a tool for people. It helps us build our society.

Halliday made a famous model. We call it systemic functional linguistics (SFL). This model looks at grammar in a new way. Many people think grammar is just a list of rules. They focus on parts like nouns or verbs. Halliday thought differently. He believed grammar shows how we code meaning. He saw three main parts working at once. First, language helps us connect with others. Second, it helps us show our inner and outer worlds. Third, it helps us build texts that make sense.

He also studied how sounds change meaning. This is called intonation. He lived in many places. He studied in England, China, and Australia. He even worked in India. Halliday wrote many big books. His work helps teachers and students all over the world. He wanted to use language to help people learn better.
