Metafunction

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

All languages have special jobs. These jobs are called metafunctions. Michael Halliday was a man who studied this. He said all languages use three main jobs. These jobs work at the same time. They work together like a team.

The first job is the ideational function. This helps us talk about our world. It has two parts. The experiential part helps us group things we see. The logical part helps us join ideas together. This helps us make sense of life.

The second job is the interpersonal function. This job is about people. It helps us talk to others. We use it to build bonds. It helps us manage our many relationships.

The third job is the textual function. This job looks at language itself. It helps our words flow well. It makes sure our speech or writing makes sense. It turns our words into a clear text.

These three jobs are all equal. They are not ranked in order. Instead, they are woven together. Every time we speak, we use all three. This is how we create meaning in our lives.
