philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Book of Rites is a very old collection of texts. It is also called the Liji. This book describes how people lived long ago. It explains social rules and how to run a government. It also describes special ceremonies or rites.

Many people follow the ideas of Confucius. He taught about a concept called li. Some people call li "rites." It can also mean rules of conduct. Confucius believed that li helps people show respect. He thought these rules could help make society stable. The book says these rites are very important for people.

This book is part of a group called the Five Classics. It is a main part of the Confucian tradition. Long ago, some books were burned by a ruler. However, scholars saved the ideas. They used their memories to rebuild the texts.

Later, a scholar named Zheng Xuan made a new version. His version became the standard one used today. For hundreds of years, people had to study these books. They did this to get important jobs in the government. This made the book a big part of Chinese life.
