He was a master of waka, which are short poems written in Japanese. Tsurayuki was so skilled that he was named one of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals. This was a special group chosen by Fujiwara no Kintō. His beautiful poems were even included in the Hyakunin Isshu. This is a famous collection of poems from many different people. People still value his work many centuries later.

One of his biggest jobs happened in the year 905. Emperor Daigo ordered a group of four poets to work together. They were chosen to compile the Kokin Wakashū. This was the first large book of waka poems made for an Emperor.

Tsurayuki served as the chief editor for this important book. He also wrote a Japanese preface for the collection. This preface was the first critical essay ever written about waka. In it, he talked about the history and different styles of poetry. He even gave some harsh criticism to older poets like Ariwara no Narihira.

Tsurayuki lived a very busy life with many different roles. He was born in either 866 or 872. His father was Ki no Mochiyuki. His mother was a court dancer, but her name is not known. He held many government offices in the capital city of Kyoto. He served as the Vice Governor of Kaga from 917 to 923. He was also the Vice Governor of Mino Province during that same time. Later, he held the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade.

He spent time living far away from the capital city. From 930 to 935, he was the Governor of Tosa Province. He left Tosa at the age of 66. After he returned to the capital, he wrote a famous work called the Tosa Nikki. This is known as the Tosa Diary. He wrote it using kana, a way of writing Japanese. The diary tells the story of a 55-day trip. Interestingly, he wrote it from the perspective of a woman. This choice has caused many debates among scholars today.

Tsurayuki's life was filled with both work and family. He had three children, including a son named Ki no Tokibumi. He also had two daughters, one named Ki no Naishi. The diary he wrote includes many poems and mentions real life events. It even alludes to the death of his daughter. Records suggest he may have died on May 18, 945. Some records say he died on June 30 of that year. His great skill in writing helped shape Japanese literature forever.
