He was a master of waka. These are short poems written in Japanese. Tsurayuki wrote more than 500 of these poems. He was even named one of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals. This was a special group of great poets.

In the year 905, Emperor Daigo gave him a big job. Tsurayuki helped lead a team of four poets. They made the Kokin Wakashū. This was a large book of waka poems for the Emperor. Tsurayuki also wrote a preface for the book. This was a long essay about the history of poetry.

Tsurayuki also served as a governor. He led a place called Tosa Province from 930 to 935. After his work there, he wrote the Tosa Nikki. This is the Tosa Diary. He wrote it using kana, which is a way of writing Japanese. He wrote the diary from the view of a woman. The diary tells of a 55-day trip to the capital.
