He lived during a time of big changes. New warriors were taking power from old nobles. This made his poetry feel sad and lonely. Saigyō was born into a noble family in Kyoto. At age 22, he left his old life. He became a Buddhist monk. He took the name Saigyō. This name means "Western Journey." It refers to a peaceful place in Buddhism.

Saigyō loved the beauty of nature. He spent much of his life alone. He traveled to many places like Mt. Yoshino. He loved to see cherry blossoms there. One poem says he wanted to die under spring flowers. He felt a pull between being a monk and loving the world. His poems often show this feeling. He wrote about sadness and being alone. Many of his poems are in a book called *Sanka*. He also wrote for the *Shin Kokin Wakashū*. His work inspired other writers. A poet named Bashō looked to him for ideas.
