He was born in 1686 in a small village. As a boy, he felt a deep fear of hell. This fear led him to become a monk. He studied many books and traveled to different temples.

Hakuin had many teachers. One teacher, Shōju Rōjin, was very tough. He used insults and blows to help Hakuin learn. Hakuin also faced a hard time with his health. He called this "Zen sickness." He learned to use breathing to feel better. This helped him stay strong as he grew older.

At age 41, Hakuin had a big change in his heart. He realized that being a good monk means helping others. He called this the bodhi-mind.

He spent his life teaching this idea. He used koans to help his students. A koan is a special story or question. These help students think in new ways. Hakuin taught hundreds of students at his temple. He lived to be 83 years old.
