Dongshan Liangjie was a famous monk in China. He lived during the Tang dynasty. He was born in a place called Kuaiji. As a young boy, he studied Chan Buddhism. This is a type of Zen. At age ten, he went to train at a monastery. He later became a full monk at age twenty-one.

Dongshan spent much of his life traveling. He met many teachers. One teacher had a big influence on him. Later, Dongshan started his own school. It was called the Caodong school. He built this school in the mountains. Some say he had up to one thousand students.

He was known for his special ways of teaching. He used small poems to explain ideas. He also taught about the Five Ranks. These were five stages of understanding. They helped people see how the world works. His ideas moved to Japan later. A monk named Dogen brought them there. This became the Sōtō school of Zen. Dongshan died at age sixty-three. He had been a monk for forty-two years.
