He was born into a noble family in the city of Kyoto. As a young man, he worked as a guard for the retired Emperor Toba. In the year 1140, when he was 22 years old, he made a big choice. He left his worldly life to become a Buddhist monk. He took the religious name Saigyō. He also used the pen name Saigyō, which means "Western Journey." This name was a reference to the Western paradise of Amida Buddha.

A court lady named Lady Nijō read his work when she was only eight. She dreamed of writing her own travel books because of him. Later, the famous poet Bashō looked to Saigyō for artistic ideas. Bashō even said that writing a new poem about a certain pine tree would be as hard as adding a sixth finger to a hand. Even modern stories, like the *Touhou Project*, use his name and ideas.
