He was a master of two different types of writing. First, he wrote haikai, which are short, linked poems. Later, he created a new style of prose called ukiyo-zōshi. These are often called "floating world" stories. He wrote about the daily lives of chōnin, or townspeople. His stories focused on money, business, and love. People in the merchant class loved reading his work. Today, he is celebrated for helping to shape Japanese fiction.

Saikaku was known for his amazing speed at writing poetry. He could compose many verses in a very short time. In 1677, he wrote 1,600 haikai verses in one day and night. He did something even more incredible in 1684. During that single day and night, he wrote 23,500 verses! This showed his great skill with words. He used common language to describe the world around him. This made his writing feel very real to his readers.

Saikaku was born in 1642 in the city of Osaka. He was born into a wealthy merchant family. His birth name may have been Hirayama Tōgo. He began studying poetry when he was a young man. By the age of twenty, he was already a haikai master. He used the name Ihara Kakuei for his early poetry. In 1673, he changed his pen name to Saikaku. He also ran a medium-sized business during this time.

His life changed deeply because of a great sadness. His beloved wife died in 1675. To show his love and grief, he wrote a massive poem. This work had one thousand verses and took twelve hours. It was called Haikai Single Day Thousand Verse. This big project made him want to write longer stories. Later, he became a lay monk and traveled across Japan. He even left his business and three children behind to travel.

Saikaku became a professional writer after he returned to Osaka. In 1682, he published The Life of an Amorous Man. This was his first work of prose fiction. His books became very popular all across the country. He wrote about the joys and troubles of the merchant class. Even though his work was not called "high" literature then, it was very important. He died in 1693 at the age of fifty-one. His stories helped start a new way of telling tales in Japan.
