Narihira was a master of the waka poem. Waka are short, beautiful poems used in Japan. He used special tools like kakekotoba, or pivot words. These words have two different meanings at the same time. He also used engo, which are words that relate to each other. For example, he used many words related to water. He might use words for "brooding" and "rain" together. This made his poems feel very deep and mysterious. Because of this, editors wrote long notes to explain them.
