He lived during the late Heian period. He was born in 1114 and lived to be 90 years old. His family was very important in the royal court. His relatives were many great leaders and poets. Because of this, he began writing poetry when he was very young. He spent his life studying how to make poems beautiful.

Shunzei had a very special way of writing. He liked a style called yugen. This style focuses on romantic feelings and a sense of regret. He wanted poems to feel deep and mysterious. A good poem should have a special mood. This mood should stay with the reader even after the words are gone. He often used old words but gave them a new way of being used.

In 1183, Shunzei received a very important job. The Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa asked him to make a book. This book was called the Senzai Wakashū. It was the seventh imperial collection of waka poetry. Making these books was a huge honor for poets. People would even risk their lives to be included. During a war, a man named Taira no Tadanori traveled to see Shunzei. He wanted his poem to be in the book. Shunzei included the poem but listed the author as "Anonymous."

Shunzei was a very hard worker. One story says he would sit by a dim lamp late at night. He would wear an old court robe and a cap. He would sit near a warm brazier to stay cozy. He would recite his verses quietly to himself. Sometimes, he would even weep softly while he worked.

Later in life, he became a Buddhist monk. He took the name Shakuagaku in 1176. He also wrote a book about poetic styles called Fūteishō.

Shunzei passed his great skills down to his family. His son was named Fujiwara no Teika. Teika became one of the four best poets in Japanese history. Shunzei also raised and taught his granddaughter. She was known as Shunzei's Daughter. She was a very successful poet as well. Even after Shunzei died, his family continued his poetic traditions. Their work helped shape the art of poetry for a long time.
