He experimented with new ways to create beautiful effects in his writing. Teika was one of six people who put together the Shin Kokinshū. This was a famous collection of poems made around the year 1204. This collection is considered one of the greatest imperial anthologies ever made. Teika included forty-six of his own poems in this important work. His new ways of writing were copied by many other poets of his time.

Teika came from a family that focused on art. His father was the respected poet Fujiwara no Shunzei.

His grandfather was a poet named Fujiwara no Toshitada. Because his family branch was not very powerful in politics, they focused on being great at art instead. This helped them gain prestige in the Imperial court. Teika worked hard to follow in his father's footsteps. He wanted to keep his family's high position in the world of poetry. He also wanted to improve the standing of his clan. His life was not always easy, as he dealt with sickness and family changes.

Much of Teika's success came from his connection to the Retired Emperor Go-Toba.

Go-Toba was a powerful leader who loved many hobbies. He loved playing the lute and playing the game of Go. He also enjoyed horseback archery and swordsmanship. In the year 1200, Go-Toba announced a big poetry contest. This was a very important moment for Teika's career. At age 38, Teika was a talented poet but had not been promoted in his job for a long time. Winning the favor of the Emperor through poetry was a way to change his life. This connection helped him reach the top of the poetic world.

Teika's work helped save the history of Japan. In his later years, he spent much time copying old manuscripts.

He focused on the major works of Heian literature. By doing this, he preserved the stories and poems that people might have otherwise lost. His critical ideas on how to write poetry were studied for hundreds of years. They were still being studied as late as the Meiji era. His descendants also became famous authorities on poetry for six hundred years. Because of his hard work, we still know so much about the literature of his time.
