Hitomaro also wrote about travel and love. Many of his works are found in the Man'yōshū. This is the oldest collection of Japanese poetry. Because his skill was so great, people call him a god of poetry. He is ranked as one of the four greatest poets in Japanese history. Some people even call him a poetry saint. We do not know much about his life. We only know about his beautiful words. He likely died in the province of Iwami. His poems help us learn about the past.
