Its name can mean many things. Some think it means "ten thousand leaves." This treats poems like leaves on a tree. Others think it means a book for all time.

The book was put together a long time ago. Many people think Ōtomo no Yakamochi was the person who led this work. It has 20 parts or books. Inside, you can find more than 4,500 poems. These poems come from many kinds of people. They were written by emperors and soldiers. Even street performers and peasants wrote them. The poems fall into three main groups. Some are songs for trips or parties. Others are songs about love. Some are songs to mourn people who have died. The book also uses an old way of writing. This way uses Chinese characters to show Japanese sounds. This helped lead to the writing used in Japan today. Many plants are named in the poems too. There are even gardens in Japan that grow these plants.
