It is called The Pillow Book. She lived in Japan during the Heian period. She served as a lady at the imperial court.

Shōnagon wrote for her own joy. She used a writing style called hiragana. This was a way to write using sounds. Most men at court wrote in Chinese. Women often used hiragana to share their thoughts. This helped them express feelings more freely.

The book is a mix of many things. It has short stories and poems. It also has many lists. One list is called "Things That Make the Heart Grow Fonder." There are 164 lists in total. These lists cover things like flowers or beautiful items.

Shōnagon did not mean for people to read it. One time, a guest took her book by mistake! Now, the book is a very important piece of history. It shows us what life was like in the court. Many people have translated it into English. It is still loved for its wit and charm today.
