It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that many Buddhists consider the most sacred place on Earth. The temple marks the spot where Siddhartha Gautama is said to have reached enlightenment. This means he gained great wisdom and freedom from suffering. Today, the site is a major destination for people on special journeys of faith. It is a place where history and belief come together in a beautiful way.

Many stories explain how this holy site became so important. Traditional accounts say that around 589 BCE, Siddhartha Gautama sat under a peepul tree.

He meditated there for three days and three nights. After this, he attained enlightenment. The temple was built directly to the east of this tree. The site even includes spots where he spent seven weeks meditating. For example, the Animeshlocha Stupa marks where he stood and stared at the tree.

Other groups, like the Sungas, added columns with pot-shaped bases during the 1st century BCE. Even though much of the original building was made of brick and stucco, it has lasted a long time. Many parts of the old stone railings are now kept in museums.

There are many interesting details to find at the temple. The temple complex has two large towers called shikhara towers. The largest one is over 55 metres high.
