It is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the country. Many people know it as a great center for learning and faith. Because it is so special, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. This site is a wonderful example of old Bengali architecture. It shows us how people built huge, beautiful structures a long time ago.

The monastery was built as a large, organized place for monks. It has a quadrangular shape, which means it is shaped like a square. Inside the square, there are 177 small rooms called cells.

Monks used these cells for sleeping and for quiet meditation. In the very center of the courtyard, there is a large, traditional Buddhist stupa. The site also includes many other shrines, temples, and smaller buildings. It was a place where many different people came to study and think.

History tells us that this site was part of a great network of universities. These places were all connected and supervised by the state. Famous scholars could travel easily between these different centers of learning. One famous teacher named Atisa lived here and later traveled to Tibet.

The monastery was built during the Pāla period in ancient India. It was the largest of the great mahaviharas at that time. It served as a home for many different types of thinkers.

Archaeologists have found many clues about who built this massive site. Seals found at the site show that King Dharmapala built it. He ruled from about 781 to 821 AD.

Later, his successor Devapala also worked on the monastery. The site was also repaired much later during the reign of Mahipala. Many different religious groups used the site, including Buddhists, Jains, and Hindus. This makes it a very important place for understanding many different traditions.

The architecture of the monastery is very special and unique. The central temple has a shape that some say looks like temples in Burma or Java.

The outside walls are covered in beautiful terracotta plaques made of clay. These plaques show art that reflects many different religions. While the buildings are now ruins, they still show how grand the site once was. Scientists and architects still study the ruins to imagine what the top of the temple looked like.
