Mount Heng (Shanxi)

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Mount Heng is a special mountain in China. It sits in the Shanxi Province. This mountain is in the north-central part of the country. It is known as the northern mountain of the Five Great Mountains. Some people call it Northern Heng Shan. This helps tell it apart from another mountain in Hunan Province. That other mountain is called Southern Heng Shan. Both mountains have the same name when spoken in Chinese.

Walking on this mountain feels very natural. The main peak is a lovely place to hike. The walk takes about three hours to do round trip. You start from a parking lot a few miles up. In June, the summit is covered in lilac blossoms. These flowers have a very sweet smell. The slopes are covered in many different trees. You can see hemlock, pine, and elm trees. There are also fir, poplar, and hawthorn trees.

This mountain has a very long history. People have thought it was sacred since the Zhou dynasty. It is part of the Taoist tradition. Many people visit other sacred mountains in China. However, this mountain is the least-visited of the five. It is also the smallest in area. Because it is in the north, other nations often controlled it. This meant it had fewer pilgrims than the other mountains.

There are many old temples on the slopes. During the Han dynasty, people built the Shrine of the Northern Peak. This temple is dedicated to the mountain god. It has been rebuilt many times over the years. Yet, it has an unbroken history from the Han times until today. There is also a famous place called the Hanging Temple. It was built more than 1,500 years ago. It sits right inside a cliff near the mountain.

Mount Heng is a very quiet place to visit. It is not as crowded as other famous spots. There are no hotels built on the mountain. This keeps the area from being too commercialized. This means the mountain stays more simple and peaceful. You can see temples set right into the rocky cliffs. It is a place where nature and history meet. It is a unique part of the Chinese landscape.
