The Huiyan Peak marks the south end of the range. Yuelu Mountain in Changsha City is at the north end. The highest point is called Zhurong Peak.

The weather at Mount Heng stays quite wet and sunny. It has a humid subtropical climate. This means the winters are mild. The summers are not too hot. There is also a lot of rainfall here. The air changes as you climb higher. The temperature drops by 0.59°C for every 100 meters you go up. This creates different zones for living things.

Many old buildings sit on or near the mountain. The Grand Temple of Mount Heng is at the foot of the mountain. It is the largest temple in southern China. It is also the largest group of ancient buildings in Hunan. Other sites include the Shangfeng Temple and Fuyan Temple. There is also the Zhusheng Temple. This was a Buddhist monastery from the 8th century. You can also find a small stone temple called Zhurong Gong.

Nature is very important in this area. The Nanyue Mount Heng Nature Reserve started in 1984. It became a national nature reserve in 2005. The forest covers 67% of the land. You can find many rare plants here. For example, there are only four wild velvet soapberry trees left in the world. Two were found near Guangji Temple in 1954. Two more were found there in 2012. Experts also found two ancient yew trees in Shuikou Village in 2013. These trees are over a thousand years old.

Many animals live in these forests too. The Nanyue Arboretum is a place for plants. Some special animals live here. In 2004, officers found a long-eared owl. This bird had not been seen in Hunan for over ten years. In 2013, tourists saw a silver pheasant. This bird is a nationally protected animal. These sightings show why the mountain is so special to protect.
