The geography of the range spans a wide area. The Huiyan Peak marks the southern end of these peaks. At the northern end lies Yuelu Mountain in Changsha City. The highest point in the entire range is Zhurong Peak. The mountain range influences the local environment through its height. As you climb, the climate changes significantly. The area has a humid subtropical climate. This means there is ample sunlight and plenty of water. The winters are mild and the summers are not excessively hot. Rainfall is also very abundant in this region.

Temperature changes follow a specific pattern on the mountain. This is known as vertical variation. The average temperature decreases by 0.59°C for every 100 meters of elevation gained. This cooling effect creates different ecological zones. Below 800 meters, you find the subtropical evergreen broad-leaved red soil zone. Above 800 meters, the landscape shifts. This higher area contains dwarf forests, shrublands, and grassland yellow-brown soil zones. These zones allow many different types of life to exist at different heights.

Human history and religion are closely tied to the mountain. Many ancient structures are located here. At the foot of the mountain is the Grand Temple of Mount Heng. This is also called Nanyue Damiao. It is the largest temple in southern China. It also represents the largest group of ancient buildings in Hunan Province.

Nature conservation is a major focus for this region. The Nanyue Mount Heng Nature Reserve was established on May 9, 1984. At first, it was a provincial-level reserve. In 2005, it was successfully upgraded to a national nature reserve. The forest coverage rate is very high at 67%. The Nanyue Arboretum was also established to manage the area. This protection helps maintain a rich distribution of rare plant and animal species.

Some of the plants found here are incredibly rare. In 1954, experts discovered two wild velvet soapberry trees. They found them in the primary secondary forest near Guangji Temple. In 2012, experts found two more of these trees in the same area. These are the only four remaining velvet soapberry trees in the entire world. In 2013, experts from the national nature reserve found two ancient wild yews. These were located in Shuikou Village, Longfeng Township, in the Nanyue District. These yew trees are estimated to be over a thousand years old.

The mountain also provides a home for protected wildlife. In 2004, law enforcement officers made an important discovery. They confiscated a long-eared owl in a farmers' market. This specific species had been extinct in Hunan Province for over a decade. It was caught on Mount Heng. Later, in 2013, tourists spotted a silver pheasant. This bird is a nationally protected animal. These sightings prove that the mountain remains a vital habitat for biodiversity.
