This administrative structure manages a large area and a growing population. In total, the city has 3,871,100 inhabitants. About 1,055,373 of these people live within the four urban districts.

Industry plays a massive role in the economy of Zhuzhou. It is recognized as a major industrial city in China. The city focuses on four key industries: metallurgy, machine manufacture, chemicals, and building materials. During the 1st Five-Year-Plan, Zhuzhou was named one of eight key national-wide industrial cities. The State Council approved the high-tech industrial development zone in December 1992. This zone is located near the Xiang River. It encourages investment in fields like biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and telecommunications equipment.

Zhuzhou is also a leader in modern transit technology. The city launched the world's first Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) system in 2018. This system was developed by the CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute. The ART uses 300 passenger rubber-tyred vehicles. These vehicles can follow markings on the roadway or be steered by a driver. People often refer to this technology as a "guided bus" or a "trackless tram." The system includes Line A1, which is 4 kilometers long, and Line A2, which is 7 kilometers long.

Culture and education add to the city's importance. Zhuzhou is a center for Xiang Opera, a traditional form of performance. It is also famous for the Xiangxiu Fire Dragon Dance. This dance is performed during the Lantern Festival. For higher learning, the city is home to the Hunan University of Technology.
