It sits along the Xiang River, southeast of the provincial capital, Changsha. The city also borders Jiangxi province to its east. Zhuzhou is a vital part of the Changzhutan Golden Triangle. This metropolitan region includes the neighboring cities of Changsha and Xiangtan. Because of its location, it serves as a central hub for the area.

The city's climate is classified as a subtropical monsoon zone. This means the weather changes significantly between seasons. Summers are long and characterized by hot temperatures. Winters are cool or cold, often feeling cloudy and damp. You might even see occasional snow flurries during the colder months. The annual mean temperature for the entire administrative area is 17.7 °C (63.9 °F). In the hottest month, July, the average temperature reaches 29.5 °C (85.1 °F). Conversely, January is the coolest month with an average of 5.3 °C (41.5 °F).

Zhuzhou is a critical transportation junction for South China. Two major railway lines meet here: the Beijing–Guangzhou railway and the Shanghai–Kunming railway. The main Zhuzhou Railway Station is located in the downtown area. It is one of five special class passenger-and-goods stations in China. On average, a train passes through this station every three minutes.

The Zhuzhou North Station is also a massive hub for goods. It manages 110 trains and more than 30,000 passengers every day. High-speed rail also serves the city via the Zhuzhou West station.

The city's administration is divided into several different parts. Zhuzhou governs five counties and four districts. The districts include Hetang, Lusong, Shifeng, and Tianyuan. Tianyuan District also functions as the Zhuzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. The five counties are Yanling, Chaling, You County, Liling, and Lukou. This administrative structure manages a large area and a growing population. In total, the city has 3,871,100 inhabitants. About 1,055,373 of these people live within the four urban districts.

Industry plays a massive role in the economy of Zhuzhou. It is recognized as a major industrial city in China. The city focuses on four key industries: metallurgy, machine manufacture, chemicals, and building materials. During the 1st Five-Year-Plan, Zhuzhou was named one of eight key national-wide industrial cities. The State Council approved the high-tech industrial development zone in December 1992. This zone is located near the Xiang River. It encourages investment in fields like biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and telecommunications equipment.

Zhuzhou is also a leader in modern transit technology. The city launched the world's first Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) system in 2018. This system was developed by the CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute. The ART uses 300 passenger rubber-tyred vehicles. These vehicles can follow markings on the roadway or be steered by a driver. People often refer to this technology as a "guided bus" or a "trackless tram." The system includes Line A1, which is 4 kilometers long, and Line A2, which is 7 kilometers long.

Culture and education add to the city's importance. Zhuzhou is a center for Xiang Opera, a traditional form of performance. It is also famous for the Xiangxiu Fire Dragon Dance. This dance is performed during the Lantern Festival. For higher learning, the city is home to the Hunan University of Technology. Zhuzhou also maintains international connections through sister city agreements. It has partnerships with cities like Fredrikstad in Norway and Pietermaritzburg in South Africa.
