This specific location makes it a vital hub for movement and trade. Yueyang is the only international trade port city in Hunan. Its economic strength is very high. It ranks second in the province, following only the provincial capital, Changsha.

The city is organized into several different administrative divisions. The prefecture includes six outlying districts. These districts are Huarong, Linxiang, Xiangyin, Pingjiang, Miluo, and Yueyang County. There are also two special districts known as Junshan and Yunxi. These two districts used to be part of the city proper. They were later separated for administrative purposes. The built-up or metro area includes the Yueyanglou and Yunxi districts. The Junshan District is not part of this conurbated area. This complex structure helps the government manage the large region.

History shows that people have lived in this area for over 3,000 years. The region has held many different names over the centuries. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, it was called Ximi. This was under the rule of the Chu state. In 210 AD, during the Three Kingdoms period, Sun Wu established a prefecture called Hanchang. During the Song dynasty, which lasted from AD 960 to AD 1279, the city was heavily fortified. It had large walls and became the seat of the Yueyang military prefecture. This is where the city gets its modern name. In 1852, the city was captured during the Taiping Rebellion. This was a key step for rebels moving up the Yangtze River valley toward Nanjing. By 1911, at the start of the Republic of China, it became a county named Yueyang.

Tourism is a major part of the city's identity. The Yueyang Tower is an ancient and famous Chinese tower. It sits on the shore of Dongting Lake. It is recognized as one of the Three Great Towers of Jiangnan. This title places it alongside the Pavilion of Prince Teng and the Yellow Crane Tower. Many visitors come to see this landmark. Dongting Lake is another famous attraction for tourists. Local food is also a draw for visitors. The silver fish from Dongting Lake are a very famous specialty.

The population of Yueyang is quite large. According to the 2020 Chinese census, the population was 5,051,922. However, the number changed recently. In 2021, the permanent resident population was 5,051,922. This represented a decrease of 424,162 people from the end of the previous year. Despite these changes, the city remains a massive urban center. The built-up area contains over one million people. This includes residents of the Yueyanglou and Yunxi districts.

Transportation connects Yueyang to the rest of the world. The city has two major crossings over the Yangtze River. These are the Jingyue Yangtze River Bridge and the Dongting Lake Bridge.

The Dongting Lake Bridge is a significant piece of infrastructure. For air travel, the city is served by the Yueyang Sanhe Airport. Education is also a major pillar of the community. There are six colleges and polytechnic schools in the city. The largest of these is the Hunan Institute of Science and Technology. Other schools include the Yueyang University and several vocational colleges.

Yueyang also maintains international connections through sister cities. This process is known as twinning. The city is twinned with Numazu in Japan, established in 1985. It is also twinned with Titusville, Florida, in the United States. Other international partners include Castlegar in Canada and Stara Zagora in Bulgaria. The city is also linked to the City of Cockburn in Australia. A connection with Juiz de Fora in Brazil is set for 2025. These relationships help Yueyang connect to many different global cultures.
