The city is a major part of the Changzhutan City Cluster. This cluster includes the core cities of Changsha and Zhuzhou. Xiangtan also belongs to the Greater Changsha Metropolitan Region. This connection helps it function as a central hub in Central China.

The name "Xiangtan" is deeply connected to the local geography. "Xiang" refers to the Xiang River that flows through the area. "Tan" is a Chinese term for a deep pool. These pools are created by moving currents or waterfalls. One theory suggests the city grew near a large eddy in a river bend. Another likely explanation involves the Zhao Eddy. This was an ancient whirlpool in a deep section of the river. It was named for King Zhao of Zhou, who reportedly died there.

Human history in this region stretches back thousands of years. Relics from the Daxi culture show people lived here in the 3rd millennium BC. Archaeologists have also found Shang dynasty bronzewares and Warring States period tombs. During the Three Kingdoms period, the kingdom of Eastern Wu built a city nearby. They organized the Hengyang Commandery around this western settlement. In 749, the Tang dynasty established Xiangtan County near the Yisu River. By the Northern Song dynasty, it was a major commercial center for land and water trade.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the city experienced great prosperity. It relied on an economic foundation of trading rice and traditional Chinese medicinal ingredients. Because of this wealth, people called it "Golden Xiangtan" or "Little Nanjing." Before the Second Opium War, the city served as a central transfer point for international goods. It connected ports in Canton, Shanghai, and Wuhan. At that time, the population reached approximately 200,000 inhabitants.

Today, Xiangtan is a large and diverse administrative area. It includes two districts, Yuetang and Yuhu, as well as two county-level cities. These cities are Shaoshan and Xiangxiang. It also governs Xiangtan County. According to the 2010 census, the total population was 2,748,552. Of these, 1,877,919 lived in the built-up urban areas. The climate is humid subtropical with distinct seasons. Summers are long and hot, with July averaging 28 degrees Celsius. Winters are cool and damp, with January averaging 8 degrees Celsius.

The city is also a significant center for education and research. It is recognized by the Nature Index as a top 200 city globally for scientific research outputs. Xiangtan University is a Double First-Class Construction university located here. Other important institutions include the Hunan Institute of Engineering and the Hunan University of Science and Technology. The city also manages a high-tech industrial development zone. This focus on science and industry helps drive the local economy.

Xiangtan is famous for many notable people and local products. It is the birthplace of several founding leaders of the Chinese Communist Party. These include Chairman Mao Zedong, President Liu Shaoqi, and Marshal Peng Dehuai. The area also produced the painter Qi Baishi and tennis player Peng Shuai. Economically, the city is known for producing soy sauce and lotus seeds. It is also known for the areca nut industry. Although the fruit is grown in Hainan, it is processed locally. In 2003, the sales revenue for the areca nut industry reached ¥800 million.
