This city is part of a big group of cities called the Changzhutan City Cluster. This group includes the city of Changsha and the city of Zhuzhou. Xiangtan is also part of the Greater Changsha Metropolitan Region. It is a very busy place for science and learning. In fact, the Nature Index says it is one of the top 200 cities in the world for scientific research.

The name Xiangtan tells a story about the water. "Xiang" is the name of the river. "Tan" is a Chinese word for a deep pool. These pools are made by moving water or waterfalls. Some people think the city grew near a large eddy in the river. Another story points to the Zhao Eddy. This was an ancient whirlpool in a deep part of the river. It was named for King Zhao of Zhou, who died there.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Relics from the Daxi culture show people lived there in the 3rd millennium BC. Later, the Tang dynasty made it Xiangtan County in the year 749. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the city became very rich. It was a major place for trading rice and medicine. People even called it "Golden Xiangtan" or "Little Nanjing." Before the Second Opium War, about 200,000 people lived there to trade goods.

Today, the city is a place with many different parts. It has two districts, two cities, and one county. In 2010, the population was 2,748,552 people. The weather here is humid and subtropical. This means summers are long and hot. Winters are cool, cold, and damp with some snow. The average temperature in July is 28 degrees Celsius. In January, it averages 8 degrees Celsius.

Xiangtan is also famous for the people born there. Many leaders of the Chinese Communist Party came from this area. This includes Chairman Mao Zedong and President Liu Shaoqi. Famous artists like the painter Qi Baishi also called this place home. You can find many big schools here, like Xiangtan University. The city is also known for making soy sauce and lotus seeds. Some people even chew areca nut, a habit that started 400 years ago.
