Xiang Zhongfa was a major leader in the early days of the Chinese Communist Party, or CCP. He was born in 1879 to a poor family in Hanchuan, Hubei. As a young man, he worked in a weapons factory and later served on large ships.

Because he could read and write, workers chose him to lead their union. In 1921, he joined the CCP. He became very important during the Northern Expedition. He helped organize workers to strike against local warlords. This work helped the Kuomintang, or KMT, army move toward Wuhan.

Xiang's path to power involved traveling far from home. In 1927, he led a group of delegates to the Soviet Union. He arrived in Moscow in November and was welcomed by Russian leaders.

He even spoke on Soviet radio about the workers in China. This gave him great prestige with the Comintern. The Comintern was an international group that helped communist parties. In 1928, Xiang was elected as the General Secretary of the CCP. This meant he was the top leader of the party. Many of the people at this meeting were workers rather than intellectuals.

After becoming leader, Xiang moved to Shanghai to run the party headquarters. He tried to make big changes to how the CCP worked. He wanted to merge different groups, like the labor union and the worker committee.

He also wanted to fix ideas that he thought were wrong. However, he faced hard jobs and many disagreements. He argued with other leaders like Zhou Enlai. He also disagreed with the Comintern about how to run the revolution. These arguments created a lot of tension within the party.

As time went on, Xiang began to lose his influence. He supported a plan called the Li Lisan line. This plan called for big uprisings in cities across the country. The Comintern did not agree with this idea. They wanted the party to focus on different areas instead. Because of these disagreements, the CCP suffered many losses.

New leaders from the Comintern were sent to China to take control. They replaced many of the old leaders. Xiang tried to resign, but the party would not let him leave his role. He felt like he was just a symbol rather than a real leader.

By 1931, Xiang's life had changed a great deal. He lost confidence in the revolution and began to live a very fancy life. He used party money to live in a villa in Shanghai.

This behavior upset other members of the CCP. In June 1931, a man named Gu Shunzhang was arrested. Gu told the KMT where Xiang was hiding. The KMT caught Xiang at a jewelry store in the French Concession. He was arrested along with a woman named Yang Xiuzhen. Xiang was executed shortly after his capture. The CCP later tried to erase his name from their history books.
