After he finished college in 1923, Xu worked as a teacher. However, he decided to join the Whampoa Military Academy in 1924. His parents did not want him to join the army. He became an officer in the National Revolutionary Army shortly after. Later, he joined the Chinese Communist Party while teaching in Wuchang.

During the wars in China, Xu led many soldiers through hard times. In 1931, he became the first commander of the Fourth Red Army. This group had 20,000 soldiers when he took charge. Later, he led the 4th Front Army, which grew to 80,000 men.

He led these troops to victory against local warlords in Sichuan. The warlord troops were much larger, with over 300,000 men. Xu's forces were very successful in these difficult battles.

Xu played a big role in several major wars. During the Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945, he worked in North China. He helped build important bases for the Communist forces. When the Chinese Civil War resumed in 1947, he was active in the north. In 1949, his troops helped capture the city of Taiyuan.

In his later years, Xu held many high political jobs. He was a member of the Politburo and the Central Committee. He also served as the Defense Minister from 1978 to 1981.

During this time, he wanted the army to have better training and tools. He once survived a scary accident during a missile test. A missile flew backward and landed right in front of his platform. Luckily, the missile did not explode, and Xu was safe.

Xu Xiangqian's life changed many parts of Chinese history. He supported leaders like Deng Xiaoping when they returned to power. Even in his old age, he spoke out to prevent violence during protests in 1989. He stayed active in politics until he retired in 1985.
