The Nationalist leader was Chiang Kai-shek. He wanted to win the civil war before fighting Japan. He felt China was not ready for a big war. This caused a lot of tension across the land. Many people wanted the fighting to stop so they could face Japan together.

To stop the civil war, some leaders made secret plans. General Zhang Xueliang led the Northeastern Army. He wanted to protect his home from Japanese expansion.

Zhang and another leader, Yang Hucheng, began talking to the Communists. They wanted a united front to resist Japan. They even staged fake battles to hide their plans from the central government. These leaders believed that working together was the only way to save China.

On December 12, 1936, a sudden event changed everything. General Zhang arrested Chiang Kai-shek in the city of Xi'an.

The news was a huge shock to everyone. Zhang held Chiang to force him to agree to a ceasefire. He wanted the Nationalists and Communists to stop fighting each other.

Negotiations began quickly to solve the crisis. The Communists were very excited at first. They even thought about putting Chiang on trial.

However, Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union wanted a peaceful solution. He did not want the alliance to fail. Because of this, the Communist leader Zhou Enlai began talking with Zhang. Chiang's wife, Soong Mei-ling, also flew to Xi'an to help. She and other advisors convinced Chiang to negotiate with the Communists.

After a few weeks, an agreement was reached. On December 25, Zhang released Chiang. Chiang went back to the city of Nanjing.

Once he was free, Chiang arrested Zhang Xueliang. Zhang stayed under house arrest until 1990. Even though Chiang made public statements against the deal, he kept negotiating in private. These talks eventually led to the Second United Front. This helped the two sides fight during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
