The Long March was a massive military retreat in China. It happened during the Chinese Civil War. This war was a fight between two groups. One group was the Chinese Communist Party, or CCP. The other group was the Kuomintang, or KMT. The KMT was led by General Chiang Kai-shek. The CCP had a military group called the Red Army. They needed to move to stay safe from the KMT.

The journey was a very difficult way to travel. The Red Army had to move through many places. They traveled over rugged mountains and through deep valleys. They had to cross many large rivers. One famous spot was the Luding Bridge.

They also crossed the Xiang River and the Wu River. Some parts of the trip went through eastern Tibet. The path was not easy for the soldiers. They had to find ways to move through tough terrain.

This retreat began in October 1934. At first, about 100,000 troops and civilians left the Jiangxi Soviet. This was a base area around the city of Ruijin. The leaders at the time were Bo Gu and Otto Braun. They were advised by the Soviet Union. They tried to lead the army through Hunan. However, Chiang Kai-shek set up defenses to block them. The group had to find new paths to survive.

Many important things happened during the march. In January 1935, the leaders held the Zunyi Conference. This meeting changed who was in charge. Mao Zedong became a much more important leader after this. He used guerrilla warfare to stay safe. This means he used quick attacks to avoid direct fights. The First Red Army met the Fourth Red Army in Maogong. The two groups disagreed on which way to go. They eventually split up.

The Long March ended in October 1935. The First Red Army finally reached Yan'an in Shaanxi. Only about 8,000 troops survived the whole trip. This was a very small number from the start. This event made Mao Zedong a very famous leader. It helped him gain a lot of support. The march became a major part of his public image. It helped shape the future of China.
