Many important things happened during the march. In January 1935, the leaders held the Zunyi Conference. This meeting changed who was in charge. Mao Zedong became a much more important leader after this. He used guerrilla warfare to stay safe. This means he used quick attacks to avoid direct fights. The First Red Army met the Fourth Red Army in Maogong. The two groups disagreed on which way to go. They eventually split up.

The Long March was a massive military retreat by the Chinese Red Army. This retreat occurred during the Chinese Civil War. The war was a conflict between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Kuomintang (KMT). The KMT was the nationalist party led by General Chiang Kai-shek. Between October 1934 and October 1935, the CCP moved its forces to escape KMT encirclement. This journey was a desperate attempt to survive and find a new home. It would eventually change the leadership of the Communist Party forever.

The retreat began because of the Fifth Encirclement Campaign. Chiang Kai-shek used a strategy of building blockhouses to trap the Red Army. These blockhouses were fortified structures that resembled medieval castles. They were linked together to create a perimeter around Communist areas. In 1934, the KMT forces successfully broke through the defenses of the Jiangxi Soviet. The Jiangxi Soviet was a base area centered around the city of Ruijin. Faced with defeat, the CCP leaders decided to abandon their headquarters. They chose to break through the enemy lines to find safety elsewhere.

The First Front Red Army began the journey with about 130,000 soldiers and civilians. They were led by Bo Gu and a Soviet military adviser named Otto Braun. The path was extremely difficult due to the rugged terrain of western China. The troops had to cross many natural obstacles, such as the Xiang River and the Wu River. They also traveled through eastern Tibet and crossed the Jinsha River. One famous obstacle was the Luding Bridge, which the army had to capture. The environment was just as dangerous as the enemy soldiers.

Leadership changed significantly during the journey. In early 1935, the Red Army held the Zunyi Conference. Before this meeting, Bo Gu and Otto Braun held most of the power. However, the conference reduced Soviet influence within the party leadership. During this meeting, Mao Zedong began to rise to a position of de facto leader. Mao suggested changing the route to go through Guizhou instead of Hunan. This change helped the army avoid some of the heavy defenses set by Chiang Kai-shek. Mao also began using guerrilla warfare to survive. Guerrilla warfare involves quick, mobile attacks to avoid direct, large-scale battles.

As the march continued, the different branches of the Red Army encountered one another. The First Front Army met the Fourth Front Army in Maogong, located in Sichuan. The Fourth Front Army was led by a man named Zhang Guotao. The two groups disagreed on which direction to take to reach their destination. Because of this disagreement, the forces split up and traveled separate paths. The Fourth Front Army faced heavy attacks from the KMT and the Ma clique. Eventually, the remnants of the different armies began to reunite in 1936.

The scale of the loss during the Long March was immense. The journey started with approximately 130,000 people. By the time the First Front Army reached Yan'an in October 1935, only about 8,000 survivors remained. This means a very small percentage of the original group finished the march. The survivors arrived in Yan'an, a location in Shaanxi province. This new location became the new headquarters for the CCP. Despite the heavy losses, the march allowed the party to survive.

The Long March had a profound impact on the future of China. For Mao Zedong, the retreat brought immense prestige and political support. It marked the beginning of his long rise to total power within the party. The story of the march was used heavily to build his public image. This image helped him lead the country after the founding of the People's Republic. The event transformed a military defeat into a powerful symbol of endurance and survival for the Communist movement.
