Chiang Kai-shek was a central figure in 20th-century Chinese history. He served as a military commander, a revolutionary, and a statesman. Most notably, he led the Republic of China (ROC) from 1928 until his death in 1975.
Chiang's early life was defined by military ambition and a desire for national change. Born in 1887 in Xikou, Zhejiang, he grew up in a family of salt merchants.
Following the 1911 Revolution, Chiang became a founding member of the Kuomintang (KMT). The KMT is also known as the Nationalist Party.

Political stability in China was short-lived. In 1927, the First United Front between the KMT and Communists broke down. This breakdown followed the Shanghai Massacre and triggered the Chinese Civil War. During the following decade, Chiang focused on modernization and unification. However, he prioritized suppressing the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) over fighting Japanese expansion. This changed in 1936 during the Xi’an Incident. This event forced Chiang to form a Second United Front with the CCP to resist Japan.
The Second Sino-Japanese War began in 1937 and lasted until 1945. Chiang led China during this conflict from the wartime capital of Chongqing. As a leader of a major Allied power, he participated in global diplomacy. He attended the Cairo Conference to discuss the terms of Japan's surrender.
After World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War resumed between the KMT and the CCP. In 1949, the KMT was defeated by Mao Zedong's forces. Chiang and his government retreated to Taiwan.
Chiang Kai-shek remains a deeply controversial figure in history. Supporters credit him with unifying China and resisting Japanese aggression. They also praise him for protecting Chinese culture and fostering economic development. Critics, however, point to different aspects of his rule. They fault him for his early policies toward Japan and for corruption involving the "Four Big Families." Others criticize his authoritarian rule on both the mainland and Taiwan. His death in 1975 led to his son, Chiang Ching-kuo, succeeding him in the KMT.
