The Northern Expedition was a major military campaign in China. It began in 1926 to bring the country back together. At that time, China was split into many different pieces. Many local leaders, called warlords, ruled over separate areas. The Kuomintang, or KMT, wanted to reunify the nation. They used their military, the National Revolutionary Army, to reach the north.

The campaign worked in two main phases. In the first phase, the KMT moved from their base in Guangdong. They used a plan made by Soviet advisors named Mikhail Borodin and Vasily Blyukher. Their goal was to defeat the warlord Wu Peifu first. They also wanted to avoid fighting the warlord Sun Chuanfang for a while. The army moved through Hunan province and captured the city of Changsha.

History shows that the first phase was very difficult. A political split happened within the KMT in 1927. One group was in Nanjing and led by Chiang Kai-shek. Another group was in Wuhan and led by Wang Jingwei. This split followed a violent event in Shanghai involving Communists. Because of this trouble, Chiang Kai-shek stepped down from his command. He even went to live in Japan for a short time.

The second phase started again in January 1928. Chiang Kai-shek returned to lead the National Revolutionary Army. The troops moved quickly and reached the Yellow River by April. They won many important battles against the Beiyang Army. Some warlords, such as Yan Xishan and Feng Yuxiang, helped the KMT forces. These victories helped the nationalist government gain control of more land.

Key leaders played a huge role in how the expedition ended. The powerful leader Zhang Zuolin had to flee as the KMT approached Beijing. After he was killed by the Japanese, his son Zhang Xueliang took over. In December 1928, Zhang Xueliang announced that Manchuria would join the KMT. This meant the final piece of China was under one government. This success started a new time called the Nanjing decade.

The Northern Expedition was a massive military campaign launched in 1926. Its goal was to reunify China under a single government. At this time, China was fragmented into many different regions. These regions were ruled by local leaders known as warlords. The Kuomintang, or KMT, was the political party that led the movement. They used their military force, the National Revolutionary Army (NRA), to challenge the Beiyang government in the north.

To prepare for this mission, the KMT worked to improve its political and military strength. Sun Yat-sen was the founder of the Republic of China and a co-founder of the KMT. Before he died in March 1925, he supported cooperation with the Soviet Union. This led to the First United Front, a coalition between the KMT and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Chiang Kai-shek was a protégé of Sun Yat-sen. He became the commandant of the Whampoa Military Academy in 1924. This role helped him emerge as a major leader for the KMT.

The expedition began with a strategic plan designed by Soviet advisors. These advisors were named Mikhail Borodin and Vasily Blyukher. Their strategy focused on defeating the warlord Wu Peifu first. They also planned to avoid conflict with the warlord Sun Chuanfang for a time. The NRA moved from their base in Guangdong into Hunan province. They successfully captured the city of Changsha on July 11, 1926.

During this time, the NRA also targeted the city of Wuchang. By September 2, 1926, the NRA had nearly surrounded Wuchang. This victory broke the power of Wu Peifu's forces.

The first phase of the campaign faced intense internal conflict. In 1927, a major political split occurred within the KMT. One faction was based in Nanjing and led by Chiang Kai-shek. The other faction was located in Wuhan and led by Wang Jingwei. This schism was partly caused by the Shanghai Massacre of Communists. This event marked the end of the First United Front. Because of this political tension, Chiang Kai-shek stepped down as commander in August 1927. He went into exile in Japan for a short period.

The second phase of the expedition began in January 1928. Chiang Kai-shek returned to resume his command of the NRA. The nationalist forces moved north with great speed. By April 1928, the troops had reached the Yellow River. They achieved several decisive victories against the Beiyang Army. Some northern warlords actually helped the KMT during this time. These allies included Yan Xishan and Feng Yuxiang.

Their cooperation helped the NRA secure more territory.

Key figures in the north saw their power vanish as the NRA approached. Zhang Zuolin was the leader of the Fengtian clique in Manchuria. He also headed the Beiyang government. As the nationalist forces drew closer to Beijing, Zhang Zuolin was forced to flee. Shortly after his flight, he was assassinated by the Japanese. His son, Zhang Xueliang, took control of the Fengtian clique. In December 1928, Zhang Xueliang announced that Manchuria would accept the authority of the Nanjing government.

The success of the Northern Expedition had a lasting impact on China. With the final piece of the country under KMT control, China was reunified. This achievement marked the beginning of a new era known as the Nanjing decade. The campaign transformed the KMT from a regional party into the dominant national power. It also established Chiang Kai-shek as the leader of both the KMT and China.
