His family history included roots from a Persian merchant named Baiderluden. This heritage shaped his identity as he rose through the ranks of the military. His life spanned many of the most intense conflicts in 20th-century China.

Bai's military career began with formal training in several specialized institutions. At age 14, he attended the Guangxi Military Cadre Training School in Guilin. He later graduated from the Nanjing Enlistment Corps and the Second Military Preparatory School in Wuchang in 1914. In 1915, he entered the third class of the Baoding Military Academy. These schools provided the tactical foundation for his future leadership. He eventually returned to his home province to serve as an officer.

During the warlord era, Bai became a central figure in the New Guangxi Clique. He formed an alliance with Li Zongren and Huang Shaohong to support Sun Yat-sen. This group worked to bring Guangxi Province under the jurisdiction of the Republic of China.

Bai gained significant fame during the Northern Expedition from 1926 to 1928. As Chief of Staff of the National Revolutionary Army, he utilized speed and maneuver. He often defeated much larger enemy forces through the use of surprise. His tactical brilliance earned him the nickname "Xiao Zhuge," meaning "Zhuge Liang Jr."

Bai was a key strategist during the Second Sino-Japanese War. When Japan invaded in 1937, Bai helped develop the "Total War" strategy. This approach involved trading space for time to slow the Japanese advance. The military also used scorched earth tactics to deny supplies to the enemy.

Bai oversaw the defense of Changsha, which was attacked three times between 1939 and 1942. His soldiers were considered a "crack" or elite army. He also worked to unite the Hui and Han people during this struggle. He led the Chinese Islamic National Salvation Federation to support the war effort.

Following the end of the war with Japan, the Chinese Civil War resumed. This conflict pitted the Kuomintang against the Chinese Communists. In 1946, Bai was appointed as the first Minister of National Defense. He oversaw a major victory at Siping, where Nationalist forces defeated a 100,000-strong Communist unit. Despite this success, the political situation grew complicated. Chiang Kai-shek, the leader of the Kuomintang, began to bypass Bai in major decisions. This created tension within the high command during the struggle for control.

The Kuomintang faced difficult challenges as the civil war progressed. Although they had a 4:1 numerical superiority early on, their strategy struggled. Chiang Kai-shek focused on holding provincial capitals while leaving the countryside to the Communists. In 1948, Bai reported to the National Assembly regarding the military situation. The loss of territory in Manchuria caused great anger among the delegates. By 1949, the Nationalist government was losing its hold on mainland China.

After the loss of the mainland in 1949, Bai Chongxi fled to Taiwan. He traveled there alongside the retreating Republic of China government. He remained a significant figure in the exiled political community.
