He studied at Sun Yat-sen University in Russia. There, he learned the Russian language very well. He even used the Russian name Ivan Andreevich Golubev. He became a leader for Chinese students in Moscow. This group was known as the "28 Bolsheviks." They were famous for following official party rules very strictly.

Wang rose to power during a very difficult time for his party. Many leaders were being arrested or leaving to stay safe. In January 1931, Wang was promoted to the Politburo. This is a group of high-ranking leaders. In October 1931, he left China for Moscow. He became the main representative for the Chinese party to the Comintern. The Comintern was an international group that helped guide communist parties around the world.

While living in Moscow, Wang worked on big plans for China.

He helped write the "1 August Declaration" in 1935. This document suggested that different groups in China should work together. They wanted to form a united front to resist Japan. This was a response to the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931. His work helped lead to the Second United Front between different Chinese groups.

When Wang returned to China in 1937, he faced new challenges.
