Zhang Wentian was a very important leader in the Chinese Communist Party. He was born on August 30, 1900, in a village called Deng San in Nanhui. His family had moved to this area to stay safe from war. His father and grandfather were farmers who worked the land. Even though his parents were farmers, Zhang's mother had attended a private school. This helped Zhang value learning from a very young age.

Zhang spent much of his life studying different subjects. He attended a school for fisheries in China for two years. Later, he studied at the Hohai Civil Engineering School in Nanjing. He even traveled to study in Japan and at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1925, he joined the Chinese Communist Party. He moved to Moscow to study at Sun Yat-sen University. While there, he learned about new ways to run a rural economy.

In the late 1920s, Zhang was part of a group called the 28 Bolsheviks. This name was given to a group of students in Moscow. Later, Zhang's views began to change during a difficult time. He joined the Long March, which was a very long journey. During this march, he began to support the ideas of Mao Zedong. In 1935, at a meeting in Zunyi, the leadership changed. Zhang became the General Secretary of the party in 1935. He held this top role until 1943.

After his time as General Secretary, Zhang held many different jobs. He served as an ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1951 to 1955. He also worked as the First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. He helped manage how China talked to other countries. However, things became difficult for him in 1959. At the Lushan Conference, he supported a man named Peng Dehuai. Because of this, Zhang lost some of his power in the party.

Later in his life, Zhang faced more hard times. During the Cultural Revolution, he was treated poorly by others. People attacked him because they thought he was an ally of other leaders. Things only changed after the death of Mao Zedong. A leader named Deng Xiaoping helped fix Zhang's reputation. This is called rehabilitation. Zhang Wentian lived until July 1, 1976. His life shows how much China changed during the 1900s.
