These languages are very important to the history of China. Many famous leaders spoke Xiang. These include Mao Zedong, Zuo Zongtang, Huang Xing, and Ma Ying-jeou. They were part of many big movements in modern times. People use these languages to share their stories and culture.

Scholars divide Xiang into five main subgroups. These are Lou–Shao, Chang–Yi, Chen–Xu, Hengzhou, and Yong–Quan. Each group has its own unique way of speaking. For example, the Chang-Yi group has about 17.8 million speakers. The Lou-Shao group has about 11.5 million speakers. The Yong-Quan group has about 6.5 million speakers. The Hengzhou group has about 4.3 million speakers. Finally, the Chen-Xu group has about 3.4 million speakers.

Learning how these languages work is like solving a puzzle. Some groups are called Old Xiang, like the Lou-Shao group. These speakers still use certain sounds from Middle Chinese. These sounds include voiced stops and fricatives. Other groups are called New Xiang, like the Chang-Yi group. In New Xiang, those old voiced sounds have changed. The Changsha dialect is a famous example of New Xiang. The Shuangfeng dialect is a famous example of Old Xiang. These differences help linguists study how languages change over time.

The history of Xiang goes back many centuries. Long ago, tribes like the Ba and Nanman lived there. During the Warring States period, people from the Chu state moved into Hunan. Their language mixed with the local tribes to create Nanchu. This was an early ancestor of the Xiang spoken today. Later, during the Tang dynasty, people moved from the north. They brought Middle Chinese sounds to the region. You can still hear these old words in Xiang today. Words for "to walk" or "to have fun" are still used.

Many different groups of people helped shape Xiang. During the Ming dynasty, many people moved from Jiangxi to Hunan. They settled in places like Yueyang, Changsha, and Xiangtan. These settlers brought the Gan language with them. This contact changed how Xiang sounds in certain areas. In the east, the speech changed into New Xiang. Today, Xiang sits between Mandarin and southern Chinese groups. It is a special bridge between many different ways of speaking.
