Xiang has a very long history. Long ago, people from the Chu state moved to Hunan. Their speech mixed with local tribes. This created an old way of talking called Nanchu. Later, people moved from the north. They brought Middle Chinese to the area. Some Xiang words today still come from that time. For example, words for "to walk" or "to have fun" stay the same.

Scholars divide Xiang into five groups. One group is called New Xiang. It is spoken in cities like Changsha. Another group is Old Xiang. It is spoken in places like Shaoyang.

Old Xiang keeps some sounds from the past. New Xiang has changed more over time. Other groups include Chen-Xu, Hengzhou, and Yong-Quan. Many people from Jiangxi also moved to Hunan. Their Gan language helped shape how Xiang sounds today.
