Huizhou Chinese

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hui Chinese is a special way of speaking. It is spoken in a small area. This area includes parts of Anhui, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi. This place is called the Hui cultural region.

This way of talking changes a lot from town to town. Even people in the same county might not understand each other. Some experts find it hard to group these ways of speaking together. Some think it belongs with Wu Chinese. Others think it belongs with Gan Chinese. Some think it is its own group.

Long ago, merchants from Huizhou lived in the city of Yangzhou. These traders helped the town stay busy and strong. They even paid for operas and shows in the Hui dialect. This helped people feel a sense of identity. Their way of speaking helped them know who they were.

There are five main subgroups of Hui Chinese. One is called Ji–She. Another is called Xiu–Yi. There is also Qi–De, Yanzhou, and Jing–Zhan. Each group has its own unique sounds. For example, the way people say words for "speech" or "yard" can change. In some places, the endings of words sound very different from standard Chinese.
