Jiang Zemin was a prominent Chinese politician who shaped modern China. He served as a top leader for many years. From 1989 to 2002, he was the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He was also the chairman of the Central Military Commission from 1989 to 2004. Additionally, he served as the president of China from 1993 to 2003.

He is recognized as the core leader of China's third generation of leadership. This places him alongside other major leaders like Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.

Jiang's early life was shaped by significant historical changes. He was born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, on 17 August 1926. During his youth, Japan occupied parts of China. His uncle, Jiang Shangqing, died fighting the Japanese and was seen as a national hero. Jiang studied electrical engineering at the National Central University. He later transferred to the National Chiao Tung University. He graduated in 1947 and joined the CCP while in college.

Before becoming a top leader, Jiang worked in engineering and administration. In the 1950s, he trained at the Stalin Automobile Works in Moscow. He later returned to Shanghai in 1962 to work in various institutes. Between 1970 and 1972, he served in Romania. He led an expert team to establish fifteen machinery manufacturing plants there.

After 1979, he helped oversee special economic zones (SEZs). These zones were designed to increase trade and foreign investment. Jiang's pragmatic reports on these zones helped him gain the support of Deng Xiaoping.

Jiang rose to national power following the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre. This was a period of great tension within the CCP. Zhao Ziyang was removed from his position for supporting the student movement. Jiang was chosen as a compromise candidate to replace Zhao. He became the general secretary in June 1989. At first, he had a small power base within the party. However, he eventually consolidated his hold to become the paramount leader. He also focused on increasing political thought work and propaganda within the party.

His administration introduced major economic and educational changes. In 1992, Jiang introduced the term "socialist market economy." This helped accelerate the process of reform and opening up. His government oversaw the privatization of many state-owned enterprises. He also broke the "iron rice bowl," which was a system of guaranteed lifetime employment. To improve the nation, he launched Project 211 and Project 985. These were special projects designed to improve education and science.

In 2001, China joined the World Trade Organization. This was a landmark moment for the country's economy. In foreign policy, he signed a friendship treaty with Russia in 2001. Relations with the United States were often difficult during his leadership. Tensions arose during the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1996. There was also the 1999 bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. Furthermore, the 2001 Hainan island incident caused friction between the two nations. Despite these tensions, Jiang met with many world leaders. He held bilateral meetings with U.S. President Bill Clinton.

He began stepping down from his official roles in 2002. He was succeeded by Hu Jintao. Jiang Zemin died in Shanghai on 30 November 2022. He was 96 years old. The state held a funeral to honor him.
