Jiang's early life was shaped by significant historical changes. He was born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, on 17 August 1926. During his youth, Japan occupied parts of China. His uncle, Jiang Shangqing, died fighting the Japanese and was seen as a national hero. Jiang studied electrical engineering at the National Central University. He later transferred to the National Chiao Tung University. He graduated in 1947 and joined the CCP while in college.

Before becoming a top leader, Jiang worked in engineering and administration. In the 1950s, he trained at the Stalin Automobile Works in Moscow. He later returned to Shanghai in 1962 to work in various institutes. Between 1970 and 1972, he served in Romania. He led an expert team to establish fifteen machinery manufacturing plants there.

After 1979, he helped oversee special economic zones (SEZs). These zones were designed to increase trade and foreign investment. Jiang's pragmatic reports on these zones helped him gain the support of Deng Xiaoping.

Jiang rose to national power following the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre. This was a period of great tension within the CCP. Zhao Ziyang was removed from his position for supporting the student movement. Jiang was chosen as a compromise candidate to replace Zhao. He became the general secretary in June 1989. At first, he had a small power base within the party. However, he eventually consolidated his hold to become the paramount leader. He also focused on increasing political thought work and propaganda within the party.

His administration introduced major economic and educational changes. In 1992, Jiang introduced the term "socialist market economy." This helped accelerate the process of reform and opening up. His government oversaw the privatization of many state-owned enterprises. He also broke the "iron rice bowl," which was a system of guaranteed lifetime employment. To improve the nation, he launched Project 211 and Project 985. These were special projects designed to improve education and science.

Jiang's era was marked by significant global connections and shifts. He oversaw the return of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom in 1997. He also managed the return of Macau from Portugal in 1999. Jiang Zemin's political legacy includes the "Three Represents" doctrine. This was added to the CCP constitution in 2002. This doctrine allowed private business owners to join the party. He began stepping down from his official roles in 2002. He was succeeded by Hu Jintao. Jiang Zemin died in Shanghai on 30 November 2022. He was 96 years old. The state held a funeral to honor him.
