In 1912, he led over 100 students to leave their school due to a conservative principal. This showed his early ability to organize and lead others. He later attended Dongshan Middle School and served as president of the student union.
His professional journey began at the Yunnan Military Academy in 1917. After graduating in 1920, he joined the democratic revolutionary movement led by Sun Yat-sen. Ye served in several military roles, including as a battalion commander. 
In 1927, Ye's relationship with the Nationalist government changed forever. During a period of political tension known as White Terror, he decided to oppose Chiang Kai-shek. He issued a telegram openly opposing Chiang's leadership. This led to his expulsion from the Kuomintang party. Shortly after, he secretly joined the Chinese Communist Party. He also played a role in the Nanchang Uprising by meeting with other leaders to plan military moves. These events moved him from a mainstream military officer to a revolutionary leader.
After the failure of certain uprisings, Ye traveled to the Soviet Union in 1928. He studied military science at the Moscow Sun Yat-sen University. While there, he joined the International Volunteer Forces to defend the Soviet Union. He fought in the Far East against the forces of Zhang Xueliang. Upon returning to China in 1930, he worked to translate Soviet military materials. He helped organize the Red Army by creating professional command structures. He also supported Mao Zedong's strategies during the Second and Third Counter-Encirclement Campaigns.
Ye was a central figure during the Long March, which began in 1934. He served as a commander and political commissar for the Military Commission's First Column. During this journey, he was wounded by a Nationalist air strike in Guangxi. He later helped the First Front Army move north toward Shaanxi. In 1936, he participated in negotiations during the Xi'an Incident. He worked with Zhou Enlai to help resolve the situation peacefully. This work helped pave the way for the reorganization of the Red Army.
In his later years, Ye became a powerful political architect. In 1976, he was the top military leader in the coup that removed the Gang of Four. This event helped end the Cultural Revolution in China. Between 1978 and 1981, he supported Deng Xiaoping during a power struggle with Hua Guofeng. His support helped Deng rise to power. Because of his service, Ye received many high honors.
