The geography of Panjin is shaped by water and river systems. The urban section of the city sits on the historical Liao River Delta. One major river is the Shuangtaizi River. This river gives its name to the Shuangtaizi District. It is the only lower section of the Liao River system left today. The river flows through the city and drains into the Liaodong Bay. This happens between the Dawa District and Panshan County. To the east, the Daliao River runs along the border. This river separates Panjin from the cities of Anshan and Yingkou. It was once the main lower section of the Liao River. However, it became a separate river system in 1958.

Panjin is divided into several administrative parts. The city has jurisdiction over three districts and one county. These are the Xinglongtai District, Shuangtaizi District, Dawa District, and Panshan County. The 2003 estimates show how people are spread across these areas. Xinglongtai District has a population of about 380,000 people. Shuangtaizi District has about 190,000 residents. Dawa District has approximately 390,000 people. Panshan County has around 290,000 people. As of the 2020 census, the total population was 1,389,691 people. Most of these people live in the built-up or metro area. This area is made of the two urban districts and the two counties. These parts are now largely conurbated, meaning they have grown together.

The history of Panjin's modern borders is tied to the government. The State Council established Panjin as a prefecture-level city on June 5, 1984. This date marked the start of its current boundaries. The city is also known for its role in energy production. Panjin is a major center for crude oil in Northeast China. It provides access to the Liaohe Oil Field. This field was once a massive resource for the country. It was the third largest oil field in China. It sat behind the Daqing and Shengli oil fields in size.

The climate in Panjin is a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate. This is known by the scientific label Köppen Dwa. The weather patterns are influenced by seasonal winds. The city receives a lot of sunlight throughout the year. It gets over 2,700 hours of sunshine annually. This makes the environment very bright for much of the year.

Nature is one of the most important features of Panjin. The Liaohekou State Natural Reserve is a massive marshland. It was formerly called the Shuangtaihekou State Natural Reserve. This area serves as a natural habitat for 321 species of animals. It is a critical stop for birds during their migration. Millions of birds stop here, including 172 different species. More than 20 of these species are endangered. Examples include the red-crowned crane and the white stork. Other birds include the demoiselle crane and the whooper swan. Because of these birds, people call Panjin the "Home of the Cranes."

There is also the Golden Silk Beach at the Bohai Sea. For those interested in art, there is the Liaohe Tablet Forest Park. This park was formerly known as Hubin Park in Panshan. It features the Liaohe Tablets, which are stone tablets. These tablets have Chinese calligraphy carved into them. They show different Chinese scripts from many different ages. This connects the city to the long history of Chinese writing.

Education and industry are also connected in Panjin. The city has several schools for different levels of learning. Students can attend Panjin Senior Middle School for secondary education. There are also vocational schools like the Liaohe Petroleum Career Technical College. For higher education, students can go to the Panjin Campus of the Dalian University of Technology. These institutions help support the city's identity as an industrial and energy hub. Panjin remains a place where natural ecosystems and human industry exist together.
