The physical landscape of Hunan is defined by its elevation. Mountains and hills cover more than 80% of the total area. Only a small portion, less than 20%, consists of flat plains. Several mountain ranges form the borders of the province. These include the Wuling Mountains in the northwest and the Xuefeng Mountains in the west. To the south are the Nanling Mountains, and the Luoxiao Mountains lie to the east. The highest point in the province is Lingfeng. It reaches an elevation of 2,115.2 meters above sea level.

Water is a central feature of the Hunan landscape. The name "Hunan" literally means "south of the lake." This name refers to Dongting Lake, located in the northeast. Dongting Lake is the largest lake in the province. It is also the second-largest freshwater lake in all of China. Four major rivers flow into this lake: the Xiang, Zi, Yuan, and Lishui rivers. The Xiang River is particularly important to the region. It runs from south to north and forms part of the largest drainage system.

The climate in Hunan is classified as humid subtropical. This means the province experiences distinct seasonal changes. Winters are typically short, cool, and damp. Summers are characterized by very hot and humid conditions. The province receives plenty of rain throughout the year. On average, annual precipitation is quite high. Temperature averages fluctuate between 8°C in January and 28°C in July. This wet environment has supported agriculture for many centuries.

Hunan has a history that stretches back to at least 350 BC. During this time, the area was part of the Zhou dynasty. Later, the Qin dynasty conquered the Chu region in 278 BC. During the Han dynasty, the area was known as the Changsha Kingdom. Over many centuries, Han Chinese people migrated from the north. They settled in the valleys and plains to farm rice. These settlers built river dikes to protect their crops from floods. In 1664, the region was part of Huguang province. It was officially renamed Hunan in 1723.
