Central China is a massive and vital region located in the heart of China. It consists of six distinct provinces: Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Shanxi. This area covers more than one million square kilometres of land. It is home to a very large population of over 364 million people. The region is one of four major developmental regions in the country. It plays a crucial role in the nation's geography and economy.

The landscape of Central China is defined by complex topography. Mountains are frequently interspersed with deep valleys throughout the region. These valleys are formed around two of the world's most important rivers. The Yangtze River and the Yellow River both flow through this area. The valleys drained by these rivers contain very fertile agricultural lands. These lands are used extensively for rice cultivation. The region also contains large metasomatite deposits. These mineral deposits were formed during the Mesozoic era.

The climate in this region is classified as temperate. This means there are four distinct seasons throughout the year. The area experiences hot summers and cold winters. Seasonal rainfall occurs throughout the year to support the environment. Before 3000 BCE, studies indicate the climate was actually quite erratic. However, the weather patterns stabilized after that period. The presence of the Yangtze River is a major feature. In Hubei province, the Three Gorges Dam sits on this river. This dam has the largest hydroelectric power production capacity in the world. Its construction resulted in the inundation of more than 1,000 square kilometres of land.

Central China holds a deep and ancient history. Ancient Chinese civilization emerged here between 2500 and 2000 BCE. This development took place along the banks of the Yellow River. The Xia dynasty is considered China's first dynasty. They ruled this region from 2100 to 1600 BCE. During the Xia reign, the first attempts to unify tribes in Henan occurred. The Shang and Zhou dynasties followed the Xia. The earliest written Chinese records were discovered at Yinxu. This site was the final capital of the Shang dynasty. Later, many famous dynasties ruled the area. These included the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties.

In more recent history, the region underwent many changes. After an uncertain period in the early 20th century, it became part of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The region was also the source of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. This event had a massive impact, killing millions of people globally. Today, the region is focused on modern growth and urbanization. A government plan aims to urbanize 250 million people by 2025. This involves moving people from rural towns into cities and county-level towns.

The economy of Central China is a major driver for the country. In 2024, the region's gross domestic product (GDP) was US$4,173.2 billion. This amount represents about 22% of the total national GDP. While growth was slow in the 1980s, it has increased recently. This change is largely due to the Rise of Central China Plan. This plan, started in 2004, encourages domestic investment. It specifically brings investment from the coastal regions. The region is an important provider for other parts of China. It supplies mining, engineering, and industrial intermediate goods to coastal areas.

Demographically, the region is very diverse and highly populated. Nearly 364.7 million people live here. The population is 50.9% male and 49.1% female. About 20% of the people are under the age of 14. Additionally, 13.9% of the population is over the age of 65. Most residents are Han people, making up almost 97% of the total. However, significant minorities include the Miao, Hui, Zhuang, Mongols, and Tibetans. The region is highly urbanized, with 59% of people living in cities. The literacy rate for those aged 15 and older is 97%. Major cities like Wuhan serve as massive urban hubs.
