It serves as a vital administrative and economic center for the region. The city borders several different areas. To the north and west lies the Xilin Gol League. To the northeast is Tongliao. To the southeast, it borders Chaoyang in Liaoning province. Finally, to the south, it meets Chengde in Hebei province. Chifeng is a diverse place where different landscapes and cultures meet.

The geography of Chifeng is defined by several distinct landforms. The city sits along the upper reaches of the Xiliao River. Its territory includes the southwesternmost extension of the Greater Khingan mountains. It also contains parts of the Inner Mongolia Plateau and the Xiliao River Plain. The northernmost part of the Yan Mountains also reaches into this area. Because of these features, the elevation changes significantly. The land is very high in the west and becomes much lower in the east.
