The mountain was made through many changes over a very long time. Long ago, the area was part of a sea canal. Huge movements in the Earth's crust pushed the land upward. This created a tilted mountain that is higher in the south.

The rocks here are very old and special. Some of these rocks formed about 2,000 million years ago. The outline of the mountain we see today formed about 30 million years ago. This long history created the dramatic landscape we see now.

People have visited Mount Tai for thousands of years. It has been a place of worship for at least 3,000 years. During the time of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, it was a center for ceremonies. Many Chinese emperors traveled here to perform special rites. They would honor Heaven at the top and Earth at the foot.

Mount Tai connects nature and history in a unique way. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it is so special. It meets seven of the ten standards for such a title.
