It is located in the Shilin Yi Autonomous County. This area is in the Yunnan province. The rocks look like a forest made of stone. Many of the tall rocks look like petrified trees. This creates a wonderful illusion for anyone who visits. It covers an area of about 500 square kilometers. People call it a AAAAA-class tourist site because it is so special.

This landscape formed through a very long process. About 270 million years ago, the area was a shallow sea. During the Permian period, layers of sandstone and limestone built up. Later, the land began to rise up from the sea. Wind and running water then began to shape the limestone. This way of wearing down rock is called weathering. The water used cracks in the rock to flow through. This shaped the tall pillars we see today.

Scientists have studied these rocks for a long time. The formations are believed to be over 270 million years old. The Major and Minor Stone Forests are made of Maokou Formation limestone. The Naigu Stone Forest is located 9 km to the northeast. This part is made of dolomite and dolomitic limestone. Since 2007, parts of the site are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These parts are called the Naigu Stone Forest and Suogeyi Village. They are part of the South China Karst.

There are many different areas to explore in the forest.

The Shilin National Scenic Area has seven different scenic areas. These include the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests. You can also visit the Zhiyun Cave or Lake Chang. Other places are Lake Yue and the Dadieshui Waterfall. There is also the Qifeng Cave. Visitors often take bus tours from the city of Kunming. Many hotels are located nearby for travelers to stay.

Nature and culture live together in this rocky forest. Many types of trees grow around the stones. You might see evergreen forests or needle-leaved forests. There are also many plants like the Pinus yunnanensis. The local Yi people have beautiful legends about this place. One story is about a girl named Ashima. Legend says she turned into a stone in the forest. Every year, people celebrate the Torch Festival. They enjoy folk dances and wrestling competitions there.
